Job title: Lead Technical Consultant — Java, Kafka & Flink Client: Hunter Scouts Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Hybrid (3 days onsite weekly) Contract type: Contract Contract duration: 40 hours/week (contract duration not specified) Salary: About the role Hunter Scouts is hiring a Lead Technical Consultant for a confidential, Toronto-based fintech/financial technology client. This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on architecting and delivering real-time, event-driven systems using Apache Kafka and stream-processing technologies such as Apache Flink. You will lead development of Java/Spring Boot microservices, drive best practices across cloud and DevOps, and work closely with engineering and operations teams to deliver scalable, highly available distributed systems. Responsibilities • Lead the design and implementation of Kafka-based event-driven architectures for real-time processing • Build, deploy, and optimize Java/Spring Boot microservices for large-scale, enterprise applications • Develop and maintain stream-processing jobs using Apache Flink (or equivalent) in distributed environments • Design and consume RESTful APIs and integrate with SQL and NoSQL data stores • Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines and development workflows (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions) • Ensure scalability, performance tuning, and fault tolerance across distributed services • Collaborate with cloud/DevOps teams to deliver secure, reliable solutions on Azure, AWS, or GCP Requirements • Location: Must be based within a 50-mile radius of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; must have the legal right to work in Canada; must be able to work onsite in Toronto 3 days per week (hybrid mandatory) • Experience: 7–12 years in backend or distributed systems engineering building enterprise-grade applications; 4+ years developing Java-based microservices with Spring Boot; 3+ years designing, building, and operating Kafka-based event-driven systems; 2+ years with Apache Flink or an equivalent stream-processing framework • APIs & data stores: Proven experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with both SQL and NoSQL databases • DevOps & cloud: 2+ years working with CI/CD tooling (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and 2+ years deploying/operating systems on a major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP) • Engineering fundamentals: Demonstrated experience implementing fault tolerance, performance tuning, and scalability in distributed systems • Availability: Able to commit to a 40-hour work week on a contract engagement; hybrid policy is mandatory (remote-only candidates will not be considered) Preferred Skills • Production experience with Kubernetes and Docker • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) • Familiarity with managed Kafka services (Confluent, AWS MSK, Azure Event Hubs) • Experience with observability/monitoring stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) • Experience in financial services or banking technology Application process job perk: Posted At: 16 hours ago, job perk: Schedule Type: Contractor, job perk: Qualifications: No degree mentioned
