The Senior Data Scientist is a member of the Data Science Center, which supports Cornerstone’s litigation teams with data wrangling and advanced analytics programming in an environment with multiple simultaneous big data projects. The Senior Data Scientist is a highly independent professional who will be asked to solve a range of non-routine problems with moderate guidance and direction. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions • Uses high-level software tools (e.g., R, SQL, Netezza, SAS, Stata, Git, Python) to clean, build, sample, and prepare data for analysis; build analytics models; conduct econometric/statistical analysis; and create effective visualizations. • Drives the adoption of efficient data management and statistical analysis using a diverse set of analytic, econometric, database and programming tools on matters involving data-intensive finance and applied economics issues. • Fills senior role in firm development projects, including identifying opportunities for reusable code, data pipelines, packaging solutions, and high-value data sources. • Communicates with experts and clients regarding technical details of analysis as required. • Provides leadership in the implementation of more advanced techniques such as text analytics, web data collection, simulations, advanced visualization, machine learning, LLM, and model cross validation. • Promotes synergy and best practice sharing among resources; drives collaboration with other analytic and programming colleagues within the organization. • Contributes to the shaping, mentoring, and training of junior Data Science and consulting staff. • Leads in-office, firm wide trainings, and experience sharing to raise data analytics skill level of consulting staff and disseminate knowledge of capabilities. Qualifications Experience/Skills/Education Required • 5+ years professional experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches and programming skills, including advanced data wrangling and manipulation, complex programming logic, and large data volumes. S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or Business Analytics, or related field or equivalent experience preferred. • Ability to solve a range of straightforward and non-routine problems with moderate guidance and direction. • Interest in working across a wide variety of finance and economics matters, including developing tools and packages to enhance ETL efficiency. • Practical experience in machine learning techniques involving supervised and unsupervised learning, classification and regression models, dimensionality reduction, hyperparameter tuning, and XAI/XML methods. • Strong team and client-orientation and ability to communicate results and methodology with the project team, clients, and experts. Experience in leading technical projects in professional settings. • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for mentoring and teaching programming skills. • Advanced skills and minimum five years’ experience programming in R or Python. • Knowledge of and proficiency with SQL and database systems. • Mastery of version control techniques and software, e.g., Git. • Proficient knowledge of Linux/Unix shell commands and scripting. • Strong conceptual understanding of the context and business requirements. Desirable • Prior experience with traditional NLP techniques (e.g., TF-IDF, topic modeling, named entity recognition), information retrieval (e.g., query understanding, Elasticsearch, semantic search), and/or LLM-based workflows (e.g., retrieval-augmented generation, AI agent). • Prior experience with parallel database systems (e.g., Netezza, Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake). • Prior experience leveraging cloud infrastructure to meet data and computational challenges (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Azure, Google Cloud Compute). • Prior experience working with large data using distributed storage and processing (e.g., Spark, Map/Reduce). • Prior experience building applications and solving ad-hoc problems using one or more general purpose language (e.g., Python, C, C++, Rust, Go, Java, C#). • Familiarity with statistical programming software packages other than R such as SAS, Stata, VBA, Matlab, Octave, and Julia. ABOUT DATA SCIENCE CENTER The Data Science Center at Cornerstone Research is a tight knit but growing group of Data Scientists and Data Engineers. We are tasked with streamlining and innovating all data work at Cornerstone Research. Besides acting as internal consultants for all things data-related, the Data Science Center build and maintain databases and infrastructure, data pipelines, ML and NLP models, data viz, and internal packages. Some examples of the work the team has done include: • Fine-tuning the Detectron2 ML model to identify specific products inside of hundreds of thousands of images found across social media – were influencers promoting the use of a dangerous product? • Creating novel geospatial data visualizations of industry concentrations in particular regions of the United States – were there opportunities for monopolistic behavior among merging firms? • Developing API pipelines from dozens of public and private sources to collect economic, financial, legal, and healthcare data – how can our team automate relevant data collection so we can focus more of our time on meaningful modeling and analysis? • Building semi-supervised NLP models to categorize free-form text found among millions of Twitter posts – were adult brands targeting minors in a harmful way? Cornerstone Research offers a market-leading compensation and benefits package. The base salary for the Senior Data Scientist role with a relevant education is $207,500-$225,000. In addition to the base salary, new Data Scientists will be eligible for a signing bonus depending on skills, education, and experience. Data Scientists are also eligible for discretionary bonuses based on case performance, firm contributions, and other factors.
